Alan has over 35 years’ experience in the agribusiness sector in both executive and non-executive roles across a range of commodities. In a 20-year executive career involved in commodity trading and international marketing, he held CEO, senior management and trading roles with Elders IXL, French multinational Louis Dreyfus Corporation, UAE based Al Ghurair Group, as well as 6 years as Head of Trading at the Australian Wheat Board. In 2004 he founded Emerald Grain where he has been a major shareholder and Chairman for 10 years. Emerald is Australia’s 24th largest private company, it is one of its largest grain exporters and a major port and infrastructure owner. It marketed 4.5 million tonnes of Australian grain during 2013, with a turnover of US$1.5 billion. Since 2010 Emerald has been 50% owned by Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, in February 2014 Alan announced his intention to sell the remaining 50% to Sumitomo. Up until December 2011 Alan was also Chairman of Queensland Sugar Limited (QSL) which exports approximately 3.5 million tonnes of Australian and other origin Sugar and runs all seven of Australia’s export sugar terminals. QSL has historically been the 2nd largest sugar exporter in the world. In 2010 he was named as the NAB Australian Agribusiness Leader of the Year. Alan is a foundation owner and a former Director of Australia/NZ/RSA Super 15 Rugby Union side the Melbourne Rebels.
